We had a long, wet spring, and while we were complaining, the perennials loved it.  Now the daylilies have started to bloom and they are like fire crackers this year.  I had to go out in the rain this afternoon and show a few of the new blooms to open.  All daylilies in gallon containers - $7.99.

Dig-Your-Own Vermont DAYLILY Sale

SOLD (DUG) OUT -two days later...  Field is closed.





We grow our own perennials to sell, digging and potting them in the fall and the spring.  To this end we have six large gardens.  And we can't maintain them all anymore, so from one of the gardens we are having a DAYLILY DIGATHON sale -  Fill a five gallon bucket for $4.00.

I picked blooms from that digging field on Monday and show them below.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Aug 2 - Aug. 5 ) from 9 am - 11:30 am come to Amanda's Greenhouse and we will supply you with a five gallon bucket. Please BRING YOUR OWN shovel. Fill the bucket with as many plants as you wish. We will transfer the plants into a plastic bag. $4 a heaping bucketful.

This will not be easy digging, so bring a good shovel and strong shoes.

Hardy Daylily Sale in Vermont

All daylilies (buy four or more) are now $6 each in gallon pots.  June had seven inches more rain than average and the daylilies loved it.  We have now had three hot, sunny days in a row and suddeny they are exploding into bloom in the gardens.  I have never seen so many buds.

I believe these are edible, but I am not THAT hungry (unless maybe they are identical to chocolate.)

RUBY SPIDER is huge this year, easily measuring nine inches across.

I can always count on MADE TO ORDER to produce tons of blooms.

Daylilies have just started to open here and I have scheduled a sale ( buy 4 or more, $6 each) to begin July 13.  Not sure what came over me, as that is early for a sale like this.

This last one is supposed to be a double, so I will keep my eye on it.  Pretty, anyway.  The daylilies have loved all the rain.  We had seven inches more rain than the average rainfall for June.

So Many Daylilies - and ALL on SALE

I suppose there are still some gardeners who associate daylilies with the common Hemerocallis fulva, an orange flowered species native to much of Asia.  This plant spreads by underground stolons and roots, making it difficult to fully dig out.  A tiny piece of stem quickly becomes a stand of dull orange daylilies.  In my area it is known as the "ditch lily' because it  fills in ditches and crowds out other plants.  Some states actually list this daylily as an invasive plant.  They have their place, but not in a daylily garden.

If I wanted a bright flash of orange in my perennial bed I would try "Primal Scream" daylily or perhaps "Holiday Delight."

Fulva is muddy compared to these beauties.

Another color folks often avoid (too "common"?) in daylilies is yellow.  "Omomuki" has wonderful yellow tones with a nice ruffled edge.  I also like the way Mary's Gold stands out in any garden.  It has huge strong blooms and is a good grower.  Ferengi's Gold is another pretty yellow daylily with great ruffling on the pedals.

Daylilies bloom mid summer and are cheerful additions to any garden.  They come in every shape and color, although hybridizers have yet to come up with a true blue.  Ours are all large field-dug plants in gallon containers for $7.99 each.  We have a sale going on right now - buy three and get the fourth one free.

'Ruby Spider' is a show stopper and has won many awards.  The bloom is huge (9") and very open, almost like a "spider" daylily.

New Daylilies for 2013

The first perennial I ever planted was a daylily.  Like most beginners, I didn't know about the variety of shapes, heights and colors offered.  Also, this was so long ago that most of those choices probably didn't exist.  There are now more than 60,000 registered cultivars from which to choose.

My customers are much more sophisticated now as well.  Double flowers are very popular, and folks like the off-white as well.  I tend to like anything that's different from what I already have growing.   "Moses Fire" is a new double red we will carry.  I can't resist mentioning - White Flower Farm offers this plant for $27.00 (plus shipping).  All of my daylilies are $6.99 in a gallon pot.

I have a number of tall daylilies I like.  'Golden Chimes' has a yellow bloom and is 46 inches tall.   The smaller blooms face outward at a 90 degree angle giving the plant an airy, delicate appearance. 'Autumn Daffodil' is another fine tall yellow daylily.  'Challenger' is among the tallest with a red bloom  at 48 inches and it has been around since 1949.

I am adding 'Steeple Jackie' to my offerings of tall daylilies this year.  It is definitely a back-of-the-border plant, as it can can reach five feet.  The flowers are 2.5 inches and the plant is loaded with buds.  The color is a nice light yellow without the orange cast often seen in other yellow daylilies.

Probably the whitest daylily I offer is the lovely 'Gentle Shepherd.'  The problem with this bloom is the pedals are thin and delicate.  I like 'Joan Senior' and 'Sunday Gloves.'  This year I am adding 'Early Snow' to the white daylily repertoire.  The flowers are seven inches across and have more substance than other white daylilies.

I like 'Moonlight Masquerade' which is a cream colored daylily with a purple eye.  This year I am offering 'Blackthorne' which offers a picotee edge and ruffled pedals and a more prominent purple eye.

It is snowing outside, but we are hooking up the water to the greenhouse and seeds are sprouting in the house.  And so the 2013 growing season has begun for Amanda's Greenhouse.
