We had a long, wet spring, and while we were complaining, the perennials loved it.  Now the daylilies have started to bloom and they are like fire crackers this year.  I had to go out in the rain this afternoon and show a few of the new blooms to open.  All daylilies in gallon containers - $7.99.

Dig-Your-Own Vermont DAYLILY Sale

We grow our own perennials to sell, digging and potting them in the fall and the spring.  To this end we have six large gardens.  And we can't maintain them all anymore, so from one of the gardens we are having a DAYLILY DIGATHON sale -  Fill a five gallon bucket for $4.00.

I picked blooms from that digging field on Monday and show them below.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Aug 2 - Aug. 5 ) from 9 am - 11:30 am come to Amanda's Greenhouse and we will supply you with a five gallon bucket. Please BRING YOUR OWN shovel. Fill the bucket with as many plants as you wish. We will transfer the plants into a plastic bag. $4 a heaping bucketful.

This will not be easy digging, so bring a good shovel and strong shoes.

Hardy Daylily Sale in Vermont

All daylilies (buy four or more) are now $6 each in gallon pots.  June had seven inches more rain than average and the daylilies loved it.  We have now had three hot, sunny days in a row and suddeny they are exploding into bloom in the gardens.  I have never seen so many buds.

I believe these are edible, but I am not THAT hungry (unless maybe they are identical to chocolate.)

RUBY SPIDER is huge this year, easily measuring nine inches across.

I can always count on MADE TO ORDER to produce tons of blooms.

There are so many terrific daylilies out there - and what an easy perennial to grow.

Daylily IS one word, but spell check does not agree ... so for those searching, I'll use both approaches.

Once you catch the daylily bug and realize the vast choice of colors and forms, you start to have favorite hybridizers. One of my favorites is Pauline Henry of Siloam Springs, Arkansas.  Her daylilies do wonderfully in northern Vermont.  She registered 490 plants during a period of 37 years and she died in September, 2000, at the age of 92.

I sell ten different 'Siloam' daylilies and have more growing in the fields for future sales.  Here are four of them.

I have hundreds of different daylilies,  all large clumps in gallon pots and now all offered at $6 a pot, if you purchase three or more.  And if you want just one, they are still on sale at $6.99 each.

New Daylilies for 2013

The first perennial I ever planted was a daylily.  Like most beginners, I didn't know about the variety of shapes, heights and colors offered.  Also, this was so long ago that most of those choices probably didn't exist.  There are now more than 60,000 registered cultivars from which to choose.

My customers are much more sophisticated now as well.  Double flowers are very popular, and folks like the off-white as well.  I tend to like anything that's different from what I already have growing.   "Moses Fire" is a new double red we will carry.  I can't resist mentioning - White Flower Farm offers this plant for $27.00 (plus shipping).  All of my daylilies are $6.99 in a gallon pot.

I have a number of tall daylilies I like.  'Golden Chimes' has a yellow bloom and is 46 inches tall.   The smaller blooms face outward at a 90 degree angle giving the plant an airy, delicate appearance. 'Autumn Daffodil' is another fine tall yellow daylily.  'Challenger' is among the tallest with a red bloom  at 48 inches and it has been around since 1949.

I am adding 'Steeple Jackie' to my offerings of tall daylilies this year.  It is definitely a back-of-the-border plant, as it can can reach five feet.  The flowers are 2.5 inches and the plant is loaded with buds.  The color is a nice light yellow without the orange cast often seen in other yellow daylilies.

Probably the whitest daylily I offer is the lovely 'Gentle Shepherd.'  The problem with this bloom is the pedals are thin and delicate.  I like 'Joan Senior' and 'Sunday Gloves.'  This year I am adding 'Early Snow' to the white daylily repertoire.  The flowers are seven inches across and have more substance than other white daylilies.

I like 'Moonlight Masquerade' which is a cream colored daylily with a purple eye.  This year I am offering 'Blackthorne' which offers a picotee edge and ruffled pedals and a more prominent purple eye.

It is snowing outside, but we are hooking up the water to the greenhouse and seeds are sprouting in the house.  And so the 2013 growing season has begun for Amanda's Greenhouse.

Vermont Daylily Sale

I grow more than 100 varieties of daylilies and they are all sold at the same price, $6.99.  This includes some really special cultivars that initially cost me around $50 a pop.  The season has begun and the sale is on (buy five, get the sixth one free, YOUR choice).  I have found that the price of $6.99 is already a sale compared to many places.  Here are some of the blooms I noticed yesterday.

NEW Daylilies Available this Spring

Most of the following daylilies have been around for a while, but I have not had enough to divide and sell until this year. We dig most of the the plants in the early fall, pot them up and overwinter them so that they are ready to go in the spring. (We offer 125 + varieities of daylilies).

'Trahlyta' is an unusual daylily that I once offered until I ran out of stock. It’s back ... with its 6” smokey lavender bloom. It's a fragrant eye-catcher and it's a late bloomer.

'Chris Salter' is an award winning daylily with 6 " medium lavender blooms. The ruffled yellow edging makes this one a stand-out.

I have always love the appearance and performance 'Siloam' series of daylilies. They were "created" by Pauline Henry of Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and they do great here in northern Vermont. Mrs.Henry registered 490 daylilies before she died in 2000 at the age of 92. 'Siloam Double Classic,' which we sell, won the most prestigious daylily award, the Stout Silver Medal, in 1993. We offer 15 different 'Siloam' cultivars.

'Siloam Plum Tree' is one of my favorites. It’s a real beauty with 4" deep purple blooms and a small yellow throat.

It's interesting to look at images of daylilies on the internet. The bloom from one cultivar will look completely different in each image depending on the photographer and how much the picture was photo-edited. The best time to buy daylilies is when they are blooming. Around here that's from the middle of July to the end of August.
